Author: c731
Subject: Problems with Enduro loops & solutions.
Posted: 18 May 2012 at 1:01am

South African Enduro racing is being left behind compared to the rest of the world.

the EWC format is the way to go if you want the young riders (16-26) to be able to have a shot at being competitive on the world stage. Those saying "who cares about the young riders", well, they care and so should every motorcycle club and shop. In fact, the entire South African motorcycle industry should care about what the younger, up-and-coming riders have to say.

Just because someone cannot ride a motocross track fast doesn't mean that they have to. where in any rulebook does it state that you have to go fast when on a motocross track? If you cant do a jump, then role it. what's wrong with rolling over a jump? there's nothing wrong with it, except it might bruise a person's ego. If you dont try something, you'll never achieve anything. If you're scared of getting injured, then dont hit an obstacle you arent sure of. no body starts off at the top of the ladder, you always start at the bottom and the only way to get to the top is to take each step at a time. practice, try it, if you dont like it, then dont do it, skip that obstacle and attempt something else.

For those saying that the EWC format will be dangerous because its faster, etc... Just because the format is different doesnt mean you have to ride faster. Ride in your comfort zone if you dont want to get hurt. Riders who know and openly admit that they arent top 50 or top 100 riders, if they change the format, does that mean that you are going to ride any more differently to what you are now? Chances are, you probably wont, because if doesnt matter what the format of the racing is, you're gonna ride in your comfort zone and at your own pace any way.

riders who dont want to ride in front of spectators because they're afraid they might crash and bruise their ego's, are extremely disillusioned. riding a dirt bike is not about showing off or making people think you're cool because you ride dirt bikes. you ride because you love it. you ride for your own sense of satisfaction, not everyone else's.

Im pretty sure if you ask the kids and the young riders what format of racing they would prefer to race (EWC or current SA enduro), they would choose the EWC format. This is because the EWC is the standard for enduro racing. It is the highest level you get.

The EWC format is the standard. It's the world championships. Erzberg and the roof are single races. Winning there means that you were the best rider on that occasion. Winning the EWC means that you're the best in the world. I bet lots of riders, if not all, would prefer to be world champions over once-off, extreme race winners. Why is it that when race dates for championship races and extreme races clash, riders race the championship race? well, because its the championship. thats what the sponsors want. i bet a sponsor would prefer having a championship under their belt rather than a single race win.

Why do we, as South Africans, want to settle for something that is sub-standard. Why not be on par with the rest of the world?

I personally would prefer running the EWC format, because it provides more opportunity on every level, its more fun, its safer in the sense that you know what the track is like, you know where the dangerous parts are. If you're scared of hitting an obstacle, then dont hit it. there's no rule stating that you have to hit every obstacle flat out. YOU choose what speed you go, not the bike or the track.

I sincerely hope that South African enduro racing can be brought up to par with international standards

I currently run a piece of rope through the center of a roll of stickers, tie the ends to my bars and let it hang in front of my number board. Problem is those stickers are about 200mm long so I quickly end up with meters of sticker backing which has to be ripped and packed in somewhere, 35km of route marking uses some stickers. Would be nice to have it work like a road book.
