Gas Gas 300EC Stator

Postby SotS » Mon Mar 30, 2015 7:49 am

Saturday we've done some work on the Gas Gas and we've perfected the jetting and sorted out some minor issues. Before one of my runs, I kick started the bike and we've heard a screeching sound and the engine died. Kick started the bike again and the sound was gone. The bike was running very sweet except from 3/4 to full throttle it felt like the bike was going in and out of the power band.

We decided to call it a day because it was late and I didn't want to meet another local in the street again with a chain in his hand. The plans was to sort out any further jetting issues at the flat track the next day. While prepping the bikes in the workshop, my brother started the Gas Gas to annoy the women folk and the bike died all of the sudden. It didn't start again after that and we got no spark on the spark plug. After checking everything we decided to pull the flywheel to check on the stator. One of the screws came loose on the stator plate and it nicked the bottom coil seen here in the photo.

I know that one can get these stators rewind but I don't know how successful the repair will be. Any suggestions for a company? Or anybody here have a lonely working stator lying around in their garage maybe?

Nothing that I can see. One of the screws broke of in the casing. It is time to test the easy outs.

Jip, I've seen that with Honda Gives you Wings' RMZ. But it is the only way to get it out. Need all 3 screws in places I don't want a repeat of what just happened.

But easy outs are working the same way. Drill a small hole. Put in the easy out turn anti-clock wise. Screw should come out. The only reason why it broke is because it vibrated loose and the fly wheel has knocked the head of.

Correct but easy out is tapered and expand the hole a little biting into alu ,the farking things also tend to break off and then you got big kak cause they hardened steel.

Trust me i know as i once tried fixing a broken off pinch bolt in a trials bike fork leg.The bitch is even a machine shop could not get it out cause the cutting bit kept "migrating".

Cobus,
If the screw vibrated loose, the "grub" should be loose and not need to be drilled.
If memory serves me right, there are some left hand thread goodies available for reverseable drill machines to extract it.

Think twice and execute once...

Let us know how you sorted it out.

PS: sent you a whatsapp but seems I'm still blocked on your side.
