IVe had both bikes from new 4t and 2T
Cost to maintain are similer from new
I had a 2nd hand 4T as well, and never again. costs were horrendous.
If/when i buy another 4T it will be new or very close to new

This bike was maintained properly (Oil, oil filter, air filter ....). The new owner bought a bargain from me because I had the bike repaired by RCR (now RCD) and was like new when sold for R20 000.
Lesson learned:
Do not buy a 04/05 model 4 stroke. The newer models are better, or so they say. The expensive fuel (2 stroke) cost is diluted over a long period so it does not really bother me (I do not ride allot). I just ride for fun (meaning I do not have talent and can’t go flat out even if I wanted to) and do not abuse the bike.
Math 101:
Cost of bike R30000
Cost of maint/repairs +R15000
Total R45000
Selling price R20000
Total R45000
Selling price -R20000
20 hours of fun R25000
I can think of other fun stuff that would cost a lot less than R1250 per hour
Conclusion:
Buy a second hand 2 stroke. |
I get the feeling you have no clue what you're talking about. You obviously bought a piece of crap or you don't know that maintaining a 4 stroke goes far beyond just changing the oil and filters.
What bike was it? What was the R15K for?

there is a realy nice 05 CR 125 i can get my hands on and its in perfect shape. do you think it will be a massive down grade from the 250s or will it keep up on the tracks? i know the 250 has alot more power and top end but will the 125 be much slower on a track than the 250? i am about 75-80kg's??

A 4t does not just break but when it does you cry and I know what I'm talking about.

IMO the operative word here is BUDGET. A 4T requires alot more preventative maitainance than a 2T, if done, the motor will not let you down. A 2T requires much less prevenative maintainance and with the aid of a manual most people (mechanically minded or not) will be able to do a replacement topend. I have bought a couple of 2nd hand bikes (never had enough cash to buy new). Many guys will tell you that they have looked after a bike and it is in pritine condition . Fact is you really wont know unless you know alot about bikes and what to look at when buying (think there is a post up which will aid a buyer with what to look for) and even then there is no guarantee.
A mention was made about cleaning an air filter regularly as being very important, especially with a 4T. These are simple things that many weekend riders may not even consider, only being done when the bike goes in to the shop for a service, dont laugh it happens. There are riders out there who consider well looked after as having the plastics shiny and clean .
In short I would purchase a 2T again (im also on a budget) for the simple reason that if somthing did go wrong the potential cost would be half of what a 4T would be.
The last thing you want is to spend R30K on a bike that breaks and then R15K (if you have it) to fix it. That would really leave a bad taste in your mouth

Read properly bro. Never questioned what he paid. What I am questioning is the state of the bike when it was purchased and the assumptions he makes with his math. I know what spares costs and you're right; it could easily go over 15K if the list is as long as you are assuming. But if that's the list then I will worry big time if I paid R30K and only ride 20 hours a year. Assumption is the mother as you may well now.

Don't get a 125, you'll be bored WITHIN a week.
